Making clay ribbons presents a challenge. I make them originally on the wheel, a large open raised two-dimensional swath of clay. The contortion starts when the clay is still soft enough to allow bending but not too soft so it will collapse and not too dry so it will easily crack. Then come the props! Sponges, plastic buckets, wooden pedestals of all sizes to be able to keep the shape I want. Except that most of the time I don’t really know what I want. So I try to listen and hear what the clay says…
